Patagonia Shorts

Looks like my Patagonia Shorts are starting to break in nicely!
check out the fade line where my t-shirt covered the top part of my shorts.
Patagonia stuff lasts for a long long time! I still have stuff from the early 90's. And the thing is, when they do start wearing out, you still want to keep wearing them. I had to stop wearing these in public when people started dropping coins in my cup of coffee...

Saving My Sole

I've had my New Balance 790 running shoes for probably over 2 years now and have been everywhere with them. I have worn through the sticky orange rubber to the more slippery midsole. Since I still like them very much, reluctant to buy another shoe and feel that there's still life in them, I decided to repair the sole.
I dropped by my neighborhood sporting goods store and picked up a tube of Shoe Goo for about $6
I washed and dried the surface to be repaired and spread a thin layer of goo. Caution, the goo gives off a lot of toxic fumes so work in a well ventilated place. I used the cardboard packaging to spread the goo evenly. I then set it aside overnight to dry.
The goo dries clear and definitely feels grippy. I probably could add additional thin layers but I think I'll wear them around and see how it goes.

There. Unnecessary shoe purchase delayed.
Now to see what else I can repair with this stuff. I'm thinking...everything.

My Requirements for a Watch

I guess kids nowadays use their iPhones as their clock but for an analog person stuck in a digital world here are my requirements:

1) No battery replacement required. Automatic, or solar or kinetic.
2) Durable construction. Crystal and case cannot break or melt under reasonable trauma. Reminder, don't weld with watch on if you have an acrylic crystal.
3) Water resistant. I'm no diver, just need something I can swim and shower in.
4) Analog. There's something really Back to the Future about seeing all twelve hours at once.
5) Luminous hands and hour markings, including a discrete 12'0clock indicator. In pitch black it's hard to orient your watch to tell time if you cant tell where 12 is. trust me.

Optional.
Rotating bezel w/ luminous zero marking. (geez a Breitling divers watch i like doesnt even have this)
Day/Date

My watch of choice is the Seiko "Black Monster". Inexpensive but attractive. Has 1-5 plus both options. Inaccurate as heck. I have to adjust the time every couple of days or it ends up about 5 minutes fast, but that's better than slow...Had it for 8-10 years and don't think it will die. It's the only watch I will wear. the others sit in a drawer.

Vibram Five Fingers - Day 23

I'm enjoying the barefoot feeling of walking around in VFF's, including while doing yardwork. However, the quality seems questionable. Maybe Classics just don't hold up as well as other models? After 23 days I have another defect - the seam in the big toe came unraveled. My girlfriend told me to send them back to Vibram for warranty (I think she is just tired of looking at them), but I decided to avoid down time without them and repair them myself. Some upholstery thread, a needle and five minutes later, a stitched toe and back in service.
