Book Review. In Too Deep. A Jack Reacher Novel by Lee Child and Andrew Child

Oh brother. Another thriller series with an inexplicable gun mistake. A couple of times the book refers to a Walther PPK and .38 ammunition.  Unfortunately this pistol typically chambers .380 ACP. What happened? Did the zero get dropped in editing? Got .380 ACP mixed up with .38 special? Just stick with Glock and 9mm next time. Don’t get fancy if you’re going to mess it up.

In Too Deep is the 29th Jack Reacher book. Once you gain an understanding of who Reacher is, for better or worse there are eventually no surprises. You get more of the same. He is an intelligent analytical practical overdog who only owns a toothbrush, atm card and expired passport. He travels, drinks coffee, eats in diners and solves mysteries. Repeat repeat repeat. I take enjoyment in Reacher being Reacher and leave the rest, mainly the whole mystery part.

But wait a second. Reacher is now 64 years old, not exactly an age that dominates fights. The expired passport will no longer work for air travel in the USA after May 2025. He has no idea how to use a smartphone. He wears the same clothes everyday until they are dirty and need to be thrown away. He depends on having other people give him rides, loan him a cellphone for calls and operate a smartphone for him. Reacher is the literal old person stereotype. Can he really win against these technologically advanced adversaries, ie someone with a car, credit card and a Jitterbug Flip 2?

As Andrew Child takes over the series, what will Reacher’s future look like? After all, even Liam Neeson has to retire eventually.

Book read. Vince Flynn Capture or Kill.

New author for the Vince Flynn series Don Bentley goes back to 2011 to answer; Did Mitch Rapp assassinate Osama bin Laden?

While this question eventually gets answered, one remains.

Which ZT folding knife did Rapp carry?

A lower caliber Tom Clancy. Quick review of Tom Clancy Shadow State (A Jack Ryan Jr. novel) by M.P. Woodward

While the book is entertaining overall, Navy veteran M.P.Woodward makes some distracting mistakes in reference to firearms, a key element in a military thriller. He references 7.62 ammunition used in an M4 which typically is chambered in 5.56.  The heroes later load up on 200 rounds of “five-six-two” for weapons that again use 5.56.  He references a “clip” for a Makarov pistol instead of a magazine.  These basic errors that could have been avoided by a few minutes on the internet leads me to believe that M.P. Woodward just doesn’t know jack.

Run on sentence book review - “the Gathering by C.J. Tudor “

It stinks that a decent story about vampyrs (vampires!) is marred by the British author’s inability to immerse the reader in the Alaska setting by using British English though to Americans, incessant, inauthentic use of the word “smelt” refers to fish, not odor.

“Why did you tell your brother to take away my bed rail?” -

- “It’s been recalled due to an entrapment and asphyxia hazard and two people have died.”

“Yes but I need it to get up.” -
